While in Alaska, we took a day trip to Lake Clark National Park for the purpose of photographing bears. Katmai is the iconic spot for bear watching, and by all accounts there are some amazing images to be captured there. However, we’ve also heard that it gets quite crowded with people, and that you only…
Photographing the Milky Way
I love photographing the Milky Way, but images captured in the winter (in the northern hemisphere) are generally less appealing, as the most interesting part – the core – of the Milky Way does not rise above the horizon. Now that we’re back into “Milky Way season,” though, it’s a perfect time to talk about…
Bryce, Zion, and more
Last week, we went on a trip across southern Utah to see the sights. It was all a lot of fun, and I came away with some really nice photos. In this post, I’ll talk about things we did and the photo opportunities we found. Day 1: Snow Canyon On the way from Las Vegas,…
Star trails
Over the last year, I got very interested in night photography. I’ve been practicing when I can – when the sky is clear, when other conditions are right, and when I have time. At this time of year, photographing the Milky Way is not particularly rewarding, as the brightest parts of the Milky Way are…
Wolf or coyote?
I have struggled in the past to tell the difference between a wolf and a coyote, and even today it’s difficult for me to tell the difference without a good look through binoculars or a long lens. A gray wolf and a coyote look very similar. So how can you tell the difference? Take a…
Life & Death in Yellowstone
WARNING: this post contains photos of a bison carcass that some may find disturbing. I was fortunate enough to be in Yellowstone at a very opportune time this weekend, and had the amazing experience of seeing most of the Wapiti Lake wolf pack as closely as you’d want to see a wolf! An injured bison…
New Year’s Resolution 2023
For what may be the first time in my life, I’ve completed a New Year’s resolution. As 2022 was coming to a close, my daughter challenged me to take at least one new photo every day and post the best one on Instagram. As of today, I have completed my 365th post! It has been…
Grand Tetons
We did a long weekend in Grand Tetons National Park, and although we were just a couple weeks too late for peak fall color and a little too early for lots of snow on the peaks, I still came away with some really nice photos. The first full day we spent in the park provided…
Photos with my dad
My dad – also an avid photographer – came out for a visit this week, and we spent five days traveling around Yellowstone and other nearby areas of interest, each armed with dozens of pounds of camera gear. Yellowstone was, of course, an area of particular interest to us. We saw the park from Tower…
Double rainbow over the Gallatin
We were fortunate to be in the right place at the right time this evening to witness a bright, clear double rainbow. This is the first time I’ve ever seen one so clearly, and could see both ends of the rainbow! It’s just a shame it wasn’t in a pretty location. 😉
